CANDLE CARE TIPS
Basic Candle Safety
Candles pose a fire risk, so it is important to handle them with care. Before lighting a candle, ensure that all packaging and labels are removed. Always keep an eye on a burning candle and never leave it unattended. Place candles away from anything flammable, including soft furnishings and pets, and ensure they are out of reach. Trim the wick to about 1/4 inch before lighting each time. Make sure the candle holder is placed on a stable, heat-resistant surface. Keep the wax pool clean by removing wick trimmings, matches, and other debris. Avoid placing burning candles near air currents, such as vents, ceiling fans, or drafts. Do not burn a candle for more than four hours at a time, and stop using it when only 1/4 of the wax remains. If the candle begins to smoke, flicker, or the flame grows too large, extinguish it. If water touches the candle’s surface, remove it completely before lighting, as it can cause the flame to spark and crackle. Never use a candle as a nightlight.
How to Extinguish Your Candle
Instead of blowing out a candle, which can cause wax to splatter and introduce debris, it is best to use a wick dipper. Gently dip the wick into the wax pool to extinguish the flame, then return the wick to an upright position. Always make sure the candle is fully extinguished before leaving the room.
The First Burn
The first burn of your candle is essential because it sets the pattern for future burns. Burn the candle for one hour for every inch of its width. This ensures the wax pool reaches the edge of the container. To prevent tunneling, occasionally burn the candle for a few hours to maintain proper burning. Avoid lighting the candle for short periods of time as this can cause uneven burning.
